ivy 27.13; 58.6; 134.21; 265.17; 505.3.  Ivy 485.21.  ively 236.14.  ivysad 588.17.  ivytod 571.14.  epheus 97.36 (Efeu (G) = ivy).  Ivy is the seventh letter of the Irish alphabet - gat.  Ivy is considered a symbol of remembrance.  October 6th is Ivy Day, the day on which Parnell died in 1891.  In Dubliners we read in "Ivy Day in the Committee Room:"  Mr. O'Connor . . . lit his cigarette.  As he did so the flame lit up a leaf of dark glossy ivy in the lapel of this coat."  Joyce's father always wore a leaf of ivy on Ivy Day.
